LOCO ART
Local Art Store Design Project Case Study

The scope of the project was to create an eCommerce website for local business that could exist in the real world. I chose a local art store and created "Loco Art."

UX DESIGN PROCESS

USER INTERVIEWS
In order to understand what shoppers would be looking for when buying art online, I asked them.

3 interviews
Previous art shopping experiences
Likes & dislikes
AFFINITY MAPING
After the interviews I collected all the answers and wrote each statement onto its own post-it.

Then I mixed them up looking for insights.

PROBLEM
The problem then became clear:

Users need a way to narrow down the store’s art to the type they are looking for because they will buy items if they find what they are looking for.
SOLUTION
By giving users ways to filter based on the type of art they are looking for we will have more complete purchases on the website.

PERSONA 1: CHEAP CHARLIE
Will only buy art if it doesn't break the bank.

Needs to sort by price of artwork.
PERSONA 2: SPECIFIC SALLY
Wants art that matches her interests.

Needs to sort by theme of artwork.

USER FLOW CHEAP CHARLIE
Showing the actions of Cheap Charlie and how sorting by price serves an important role in his experience.
USER FLOW SPECIFIC SALLY
Showing the actions of Specific Sally and how she looks at the artwork's details and related items to find what she wants.

COMPETITOR RESEARCH
Analyzing and drawing design insights from the navigation from sites like Amazon, Pinterest, Etsy and a local art store Rotofugi.
WIREFRAMES
Creating wireframe sketches of the online art store with all the research driving the design:

Sorting by price
Finding related items
Intuitive navigation

ART STORE PROTOTYPE
USABILITY TESTING RESULTS
Users gave valuable feedback:

Heart icon's function was unclear
Side navigation had unfamiliar icon
Showing a person alongside artwork helped with understanding the size of a piece

NEXT STEPS
Continue user testing prototype
Replace navigation icon
Include pictures that show the dimension of the artwork
REFLECTION
I learned how important user interviews are when designing.
By having key insights to drive the design, I never had to question "why" I was developing any part of the experience.
